BOHALI

In a short distance from Maistrali Zakynthos hotels apartments only 10 minutes by car lies the huge Venetian fort in the village called Bohali. The fort served as a place of refuge for local people in the 16th  century. The inside of the fort is a beautiful pine wood  and all around there are remains of the old buildings some destroyed by earthquakes in 1953.

The main reason for coming up to the fort away from Zakynthos hotels is the spectacular panoramic view over Zakynthos town and harbour. On the side  are several cafes offering a great selection of drinks and ice creams. The only other way for such suberb view of the mountains and plain is the balconies of Maistrali Hotel apartment.

Saint Dennis Church

Is the most important church of Zakynthos town situated on the seafront. It was founded by monks living in seclusion on one of the islands of Strofades, where they had been guarding the body of the Zakynthian Saint Dennis. In 1717 to escape the attacks of pirates they brought the body to Zakynthos - Zante and reestablished their monastery. In 1767 the church was remodeled and a bell tower built beside it in 1854 . The church was completely destroyed in the earthquake in 1893. The present church was completed in 1948 and was one of the few buildings to survive the 1953 earthquake. The church’s interior is covered with paintings and gilding,  in the top of the pillars are panels describing the exploits of the saint.

On the right hand side of the nave is a small chapel containing the grave of the saint . The impressive silver coffin was made in 1829 by Diamantis Bafas. The saint has two festival days , celebrated on 24 August and 17 December. In Zakynthos town a visitor can easily book a room because there is a great choice of Zakynthos hotels.

MAHERADO (AGIA MAVRA)

At the foot of the steep climb up to kiliomeno is one of the largest villages in the island called Maherado. Although it’s size there are not any Zakynthos hotels because the majority of Zante hotels are near to the beach. In a short distance there is a monastery called Panagia Eletherotria that has a well maintain interior . For visitors whose dress is not modest enough , wrap - arount skirts are provided.

The main sight in Maherado is the  pilgrimage church of saint Mavra. It’s baroque interior by Nikolaos Latsis is one of the finest on Zakynthos and it is said that the church’s bells can be heard all over island even in all Zakynthos hotels. The icon of saint Mavra was found on this spot and the church was built in the same place. Locals believe that saint Mavra helps to  heal people physically and menticaly. Her silver – framed icon in the center of the church is hung with many votive offerings (tamata). Her festival is celebrated at the beginning of June. Opposite the church are two cafes serving basic food such as souvlaki, greek salad and tzatziki.

ANAFONITRIA MONASTERY

The wild west coast is the least spoilt part of the island and this is shown in the limited Zakynthos hotels and apartments found in this area. The hill villages retain much of their traditional character and architecture. One notable feature of this landscape is the ruined stone towers on the top of the hills . We can see this by visiting the monastery of Anafonitria built in 14th century ,  where Saint Dionysios was abbot from 1578 until his death in 1622 .

Tragaki Village

Maistrali hotels apartments is located in Tragaki Beach. Tragaki is a traditional Zakynthian village lays on the top of a pretty hilltop . The residents are about 500 and most of them are farmers and some in the summer are working in tourism . If you visit the Tragaki on September its not unusual to meet people collecting  the olive trees or the grapes. Climbing in the top of the village you have the chance to explore among the two churches and the small roads or  walk through lemon trees, orange trees and olive trees.  Sitting in the tiny square you can enjoy your drink under the  trees. DERMATOUSA MONASTERY

Just a short walk away from Maistrali Zakynthos hotels apartments is Dermatousa monastery . Local legent claims that the icon  was found wrapped in a leather cloth and was well maintain through the past years. There is also a  small summer theatre in the back and an old pine wood. This place gives splendid views over the plain below. One of the few places to eat , with basic food is Harry’s café in Tragaki village .

SKALIA CULTURAL CENTRE

Just north of Maistrali Zakynthos hotels apartments is the Skalia Cultural Centre .This beautiful site has four stone built outdoor theatres which hold 60 to 700 people and an indoor auditorium. There are storytelling performances several times a week. In addition is holding Greak and European storytelling festivals and events . The scenery is so beautiful and worth a visit.
