The Zakynthos Museum

On Solomos square is Zakynthos museum  also known as the Museum of post Byzantine art. It contains many pieces from the old Pantokratora Museum as well as frescoes, icons and carvings rescued from churches devastated in the 1953 earthquake. There are also some very fine venetian inspired paintings and impressive iconostases of churches from 16th – 17th century.

The ground floor houses a notable model of Zakynthos town before the earthquake of 1953 giving a good idea of it’s attractive Italian character before it was destroyed. On the walls are paintings from Nikolaos Koutouzis and Nikolaos Kantounis.

Although Zakynthos is now thoroughly Greek, evidence of the island’s Venetian heritage is inescapable from it’s Italianate church towers to the descendants of aristocratic Venetian families.

The Dionysios Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians Museum

It is situated on  Saint Marcus square in the centre of Zakynthos town. Named after Greece’s national poet. Dionysios Solomos is the writer of the lyrics of the Greek national anthem and a champion of Demotic Greek. The museum houses a number of portraits , samples of his handwriting and a glass urn containing earth from his first grave in Corfu.

Helmi museum of Natural History

This museum is set up in Agia Marina village a small village  up the mountainside, near Macherado village. It has an informative display on the flora and fauna of the island.

Nautical museum

Not far from Maistrali Zakynthos hotels apartments is Nautical Museum. The museum tells the history of Greek seafaring through a series of model boats and traditional Zakynthian navy dresses. It also houses an eclectic assortment of naval artifacts.

National Marine Park

Established in 1999 from the Greek government. The protective areas take in: the marine area and beaches of Laganas and capes Marathia and Gerakas. The park is home not only to the famous  loggerhead turtle Karetta-karetta but also to the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
